Sizing up the AL Wild Card Odds for tomorrow night I feel actually interested in baseball again. Don’t get me wrong, I have been following my beloved Cleveland Indians as they burned up the last six weeks of baseball- but I think we can agree that the MLB season is waayyy long.
However, with 162 baseball games in the season it is a bettors paradise so there is that. Regardless of the interminable length of the season, Major League Baseball playoffs are usually riveting contests and highly enjoyable. And not much is more exciting than the one game Wild Card contests which provide a lot of drama and thrills. In anticipation of that I thought I would take a look at the 2017 AL Wild Card game, which features everybody’s favorite villains in the form of the New York Yankees hosting the Minnesota Twins.
AL Wild Card Odds – New York Yankees
There is probably no team as historic and beloved as the New York Yankees. Their team hats are worn by celebrities as the height of cool, and their players are automatic MLB superstars. At the same time, there is probably no team as loathed as the New York Yankees. Their arrogance, swagger, huge payroll, and epic history of legendary players and 27 World Series titles can be a bit much to swallow.
However, the Yankees have struggled in the post season of late and even this year are looking to squeak in as Wild Cards. Not that the Yanks aren’t talented- they have the likes of rookie phenom Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez and pitcher Masahiro Tanaka. However, they have struggled at times with consistency and hence the one game playoff. New York is favored nonetheless and are -245 on the moneyline.
MLB Playoff Betting Lines – Minnesota Twins
The Minnesota Twins couldn’t be more unlike the New York Yankees in every sense. The Twins hail from the North Star State know primarily for its natural beauty and good mannered residents- New York it is not. In terms of baseball lineage, the Twins have a solid and enviable reputation having won the World Series three times and most notably in 1991.
The 2017 MLB seasons has been a bit of a roller coaster for the Twins. Their surprise achievement this year was that they are the only team to go to the playoffs after losing at least 100 games the year before. By the start of August the Twins were barely above .500- but then suddenly got hot to snag the last AL Wild Card spot. Currently the Twins are +1.5 on the runline at Even Money which might be a pretty good bet. The Over Under is 7.5 for this game and I think the Over is more likely in terms of AL Wild Card odds.
2017 Baseball Playoff Picks – New York Yankees
As much as I love an underdog, and the Twins have the hottest bats in the MLB, I think the combination of Yankee hitting power and the best relief bullpen in the league will be just too much for Minnesota. I suspect this game goes Over as the hitting is too good, although New York could be in trouble if their pitching goes sideways early. But ultimately I think this is a New York state of mind when it comes to AL Wild Card odds and who to pick.
