My Sweet Sixteen picks remain fairly consistent with the obvious exception of Villanova who definitely should have made it deeper. The Wildcats were stunned by the Wisconsin Badgers and suddenly the defending champions were out. Many a NCAA March Madness bracket took at hit that day, but enough favorites have made it through so most people’s Final Four picks should be ok.
In terms of Sweet Sixteen picks, and March Madness bets, let’s take a look at who survived the Round of 32 and who are probably going on to the Elite Eight. We will start with the big favorite Kansas, and over the next couple of days get through the other probable contenders.
Sweet Sixteen Picks – Kansas Jayhawks
Let’s start with the obvious front runner when it comes to our Sweet Sixteen picks in the form of the Kansas Jayhawks. With huge wins over UC Davis (100-62) and the Michigan State Spartans (90-70), the Jayhawks have yet to be seriously tested in the tournament. Star guard and explosive scorer Josh Jackson has led the way for Kansas with points and playmaking. He has proved tough to shut down, and when he is, the rest of the Jayhawks are more than capable of scoring baskets.
Sweet Sixteen – Pointspread Odds
However, as we look at Sweet Sixteen picks we can anticipate a stiffer challenge with Kansas’ next game which will see them facing a tough and talented Purdue team. Although one can successfully argue that the Kansas Jayhawks should beat the Purdue Boilermakers on paper pretty much every game, the truth is that you can no longer taking anything for granted at this point in March Madness.
Although I full expect Kansas to win, currently -5.5 favorites on the pointstpread, you always need to be careful with big pointspread favorites late in the tournament as I discussed in a previous post. The Jayhawks are -220 on the moneyline which may seem like a square bet- but it may end up being a wise one given the volatility of March Madness.
Betting Tips March Madness – Purdue Boilermakers
The Purdue Boilermakers have, aside from an awesome team name, some solid skills and a real giant talent in the 6’9 Caleb Swanigan. The Boilermakers beat both the Vermont Catamounts and Iowa State to reach the Sweet Sixteen, although neither opponent could be said to be top tier. Without a doubt Kansas will be Purdue’s biggest challenge. Purdue is currently +2000 to win the 2017 March Madness tournament which is no doubt a bit of a Hail Mary. Not much more of a point to betting on them to win the Midwest Region at +350 as that still means getting past Kansas.
So I think that this might be one of the surest Sweet Sixteen picks you can make when it come to betting on March Madness. I, and the rest of the nation, would be deeply shocked by a Purdue win- so it is really just a matter of deciding whether you will sweat the 5.5 points on the spread, or breath a little easier with the Jayhawks at -220 on the moneyline.
