Sweet Sixteen picks at RealBe.euSweet Sixteen picks are how you are always going to make your deep run when betting on March Madness. It has been a few years since we saw as many brutal and unexpected upsets as we have through the tournament this year, but that is what makes NCAA Basketball so compelling. So without further ado, let’s recap some of the action that led us to our Sweet Sixteen.

Sweet Sixteen Picks – Major Upsets

Where do we begin? How about we begin at the beginning when Ivy League Yale University upsets the Baylor Bears? The Ivy League is the only conference to which there is no year-end tournament, and the best seasonal record automatically gets a March Madness ticket. Baylor was the easy favorite in this contest, but the Yalies pulled the collective silver spoons out of their mouths and showed up with a dynamic running offense that Baylor could not adapt.

Northern Iowa who? That’s right. Not only did the little university from Cedar Rapids beat the University of Texas Longhorns, but they almost beat Texas A&M in the following round. Northern Iowa’s half court three point buzzer beater signaled yet another Round One upset in the most exciting sports tournament on the planet.

Michigan State. Michigan State who not only broke my bracket but also broke my heart. The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders took the elite level No. 2 Michigan State out behind the Appalachian outhouse and whupped them. Embarrassing. My bracket along with everyone else’s in the continental U.S. went out the window at that moment. The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders sounds like a beer league touch football team made up of aging, divorced frat guys. What the *&^$@%^?? Enough said.

And although there were plenty of upsets to choose from, we will end with the No. 11 Gonzaga Bulldogs putting a beating on the No. 3 Utah Utes and winning by a difference of 23 points. That is not just an upset- that makes one question the Selection Sunday seeding of the Bulldogs. Were they really a No. 11? Conspiracy theories aside, what the heck happened? Well the Bulldogs got points from everybody including their big man Domantas Sabonis and Gonzaga never looked back. Whether the Bulldogs have much more runway left is a matter for debate, but they are having a heck of a 2016 March Madness tournament. They may very well be a great value when considering your Sweet Sixteen picks.

So who does that leave at the end of the day? Well as funny as it sounds after so many upsets, it still pays to go with the established programs. The UNC Tarheels, the Duke Blue Devils, and the Kansas Jayhawks are still riding strong and they don’t look worried. However, it only gets tougher from here on in and it may take the likes of a Kansas to take it down. So with sadness I cross out Michigan State and pencil in Kansas.
