College football futures are always a lot of fun to handicap even though they can drive a sane man mad. With the 2016/17 NCAA Football season just days away, I thought I would talk a little about how I bet college football futures without turning into a drooling fool.
College Football Futures – Preview
College football futures can often be very difficult to handicap depending on the line. Often there are just too many unknowns for some NCAA football futures to really be making more than an educated guess. There are a number of reasons for this of which the major factors are the disparity between schools, and the inconsistency of younger non-professional players. However, some are easier than others and let’s take a look at them and you can decide your comfort level on risk versus return.
Betting On NCAA Football – 2016 Futures
A typically solid and predictable future wager to bet on in college football is which teams will win their conference, and indeed which teams will make a serious run at the College Football Championship. At heart this is really no different than handicapping NFL future bets. The big schools tend to win in their conferences, and often it is a battle for second and third. Approach college futures on who will win their conference the same way you would pro ball. The AP polls are usually solid, and as always adjust mid season if necessary based on injuries or suspensions etc. Ultimately your top team picks will include the Alabama Crimson Tide at +550, the Clemson Tigers at +700, and some sneaky good value on the Ohio Buckeyes at +750.
Heisman Trophy Betting – Lines and Odds
What other college football future bets are a little more profitable when it comes to finding a solid line? I have always found Heisman Trophy future bets to be great spots to make nice positive additions to my bankroll. Typically we have a small group of elite level contenders who through the last couple of years of their college career are on the shortlist. For more details see my post on this year’s Heisman Trophy contest.
Examples of this would be Deshaun Watson (+350) and Christian McCaffrey (+450) who were last year’s runners up to Derrick Henry. Henry deserved to win, and this year Watson and McCaffrey are going to no doubt be the final two. I usually like seniors over other classmen, and usually like running backs over QBs, but handicap according to the individuals. The only real concern is mid season injury but that is just part of betting futures in all sports- it is what keeps it interesting!
