NFL Preseason Week 1 is finally here with four days of back to back football games. I am happier than puppy with a shoelace and have been carefully considering the NFL Preseason Week 1 lines. The action kicks off tomorrow with the Houston Texans visiting the once mighty Carolina Panthers. The game goes on Wednesday, August 9th at 7:30pm.
Over the next few days I will take a look at a number of NFL Preseason Week 1 games as we look to get our online football betting groove back on. Of course NFL Preseason football wagering is a different animal than the regular season so we will discuss some tips and tricks for successful and profitable plays. As always, make sure to factor in your own handicapping and make sure you are comfortable with your picks!
NFL Preseason Week 1 – Houston Texans vs. Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers have fallen a long way since being Super Bowl entrants in 2015. Helmed by generational talent Cam Newton, the Panthers had a brilliant season on their run to the Super Bowl finishing 15-1. The 2016 season however proved to be a Bizarro Superman reversal, as the Panthers stumbled to a 6-10 record and didn’t even make the playoffs. In terms of NFL Preseason Week 1 betting, the future doesn’t look a whole lot brighter for Carolina other than they are playing a deeply inconsistent Houston Texans team.
Still with franchise QB Cam Newton’s talent, and some decent off season acquisitions, the Panthers might be able to go .500 this season. In particular, college superstar Christian McCaffrey will be a huge addition at running back, and if he and Newton can stay healthy then watch out. However, you won’t see Newton in Wednesday’s contest against the Texans as he is still recovering from a shoulder injury and the following surgery. The Panthers’ QB is said to be lightly throwing in practice but I suspect he will be out most, if not all, of the preseason.
Preseaon NFL Betting – Houston Texans
The Houston Texans on the other hand are looking to improve this season after Brock Osweiler had trouble running the O last year. He will most likely lose the job to somebody named Tom Savage whom I have never heard of. Of more interest is theoretical third string QB DeShaun Watson who won last year’s College Football Championship with Clemson. By all accounts he has had a phenomenal rookie camp as so expect to see him on the field.
The oft injured J.J. Watt is back from, well, back surgery and I for one hope he has a healthy year. He is an outstanding player to watch and is one of those complete defensive players that can actually change the course of a game on his own. I don’t expect to see him too often through the preseason though, as the Texans’ coaching staff will be giving him plenty of rest before the regular season starts.
NFL Betting Online – Lines and Odds
All in all this game is a pick’em at -1.5 for the Panthers at home and the Texans EVEN on the moneyline. I expect that we will see more firepower out of the Texans on the QB front, and some dazzling running by McCaffrey in the blue and white. I will probably put a few bucks on the Texans here- but I think this will be a meeting of average teams with injuries in key positions. Either way enjoy the heck out of it!
