Our NFL Week 13 Betting Preview is here, and as the season continues it’s becoming a sprint to the finish. At this point half the football league is either currently sitting in, or is jockeying for a post-season berth. But enough preamble, let’s get right into Week 13’s biggest games.
Seattle Seahawks (-1) at Minnesota Vikings – Critical NFC Game
This is probably the biggest game of the week. The 6-5 Seahawks, who currently occupy the second wildcard spot in the NFC, fly to Minnesota to take on rushing leader Adrian Peterson and the NFC North leading Vikings. Both teams are coming off impressive wins. The Vikings went into Atlanta and doubled up the Falcons 20-10, while Seattle engaged in arguably the week’s craziest game as franchise QB Russell Wilson threw five TD passes to edge the Hawks past the Pittsburgh Steelers.
At a -1 spread, this is the closest game of the week. The Hawks have only two of their six wins away from CenturyLink field, while the Vikings have only lost once at home all year. However, this is the time of the year where the Seahawks shine. Every year in the back half of the season the Hawks put together a run to get themselves into the playoffs. After last week’s thriller versus the Steelers many believe we’re looking at history repeating itself.
And don’t look now but the Hawks have a top 10 offense and top 10 defense. Seattle also matches up very well against second year Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater. He has only eight TD passes on the season which is just three more than Wilson had LAST GAME.
On the flip side, the Vikings come in with the number one rushing attack at a whopping 146.4 ground yards per game. By eating up clock, the Vikings can keep Wilson and Co. off the field and put strain on a Hawks defense which hasn’t looked nearly as dominant as in years past.
This is going to be a tight one with both teams clambering for a playoff spot. With a -1 spread and 41.5 O/U, bookmakers are predicting a close, low scoring contest.
The Houston Texans (+3) at the Buffalo Bills – Pivotal AFC Game
In a game that doesn’t really jump out at you, this might be the most pivotal game in the AFC this week. The Texans are rolling with four wins a row and are led by the NFL’s best defensive player in J.J. Watt. On the flip side, the Bills have lost back-to-back but are coming home for the first time in nearly a month.
Neither team possesses a franchise QB so they both lean on their respective defenses to win games. The Bills haven’t had a win streak of longer than two games all year, and they probably need to string one together right now in order to get back into a wildcard spot in the AFC.
The Texans have a share of the AFC South lead and are playing their best football of the season. They’ve had major injury issues on both sides of the ball which has hurt them to date. Star WR Deandre Hopkins is a matchup nightmare, and if the Bills can’t create enough pass rush the Texans should be able to move the ball and eat up enough clock in this pivotal road game.
With an O/U of 41.5, oddsmakers expect a low scoring affair between two up-and-coming AFC teams.
Indianapolis Colts (+6.5) at the Pittsburgh Steelers – Both Teams Need Win
The Steelers are coming off a heartbreaker in Seattle and find themselves clinging to the second AFC wildcard spot. The Colts on the other hand, have a share of the AFC South lead and have gone 4-0 without franchise QB Andrew Luck under center.
Luck won’t be on the field again as the Colts turn to 41 year old QB Matt Hasselbeck. The Steelers defense has struggled all year, but it does get the benefit of not having to face perennial MVP candidate Andrew Luck on Primetime. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger left last week’s game with a concussion but all signs point to him playing. At home the Steelers are tough team to beat, and are in desperation mode as their only way into the playoffs is via the wildcard.
Road teams have covered over 65% of the time on Primetime, which makes you think the Colts have a shot at keeping this close. This is huge game for both teams as many believe that if either one of these teams can get into the playoffs, either one them can go on the road and challenge the Patriots or Broncos.
