Thursday night football has become a pleasant interlude in my otherwise long week between Monday Night football and Sunday NFL. It almost feels like the weekend has arrived and suddenly life doesn’t feel like the usual grind.
Now to be fair you don’t always get a great game, but we are in luck for Thursday night football this week. Facing off in Minnesota will be the surprising 10-1 Dallas Cowboys versus the 6-4 Minnesota Vikings. With the Vikings fighting for any sign of a postseason future, and with the Cowboys dominating their opponents, this will be a heck of a game.
Thursday Night Football – Dallas Cowboys vs. Minnesota Vikings
The Dallas Cowboys are the obvious favorite here but only by -3.5 on the point spread which I am somewhat surprised by. The Minnesota Vikings are + 155 on the money line which seems short and the Over Under Total is 44.5. I assumed between the talent disparity and the direction of public money that Dallas would be at least 6 point favorites- but the bookmakers seem to think otherwise.
Thursday Night Football – Minnesota Vikings Upset
The real question in terms of this game is can the Vikings hold their house. With the league’s worst offense due to injuries to Adrian Peterson and a decimated offensive line, Sam Bradford and co. are struggling to score points. They do however possess the league’s 3rd best defense and the D always plays better at home. It is clear that the Vikings will not score a ton of points against Dallas even with the Cowboys having the 21st ranked D in the league. The question is, can they shut them down offensively and squeak out a win?

The Cowboys on the other hand can score points even though the knock against Dak Prescott was that he would throw less TDs than Tony Romo. While that has turned out to be true, he has run for more TDs than Romo and star running back Ezekiel Elliot has been torching defenses around the league. The Cowboy’s O line has been magnificent and their D adequate. Sounds like winning football to me.
So why only -3.5 faves in Minnesota? I think it is the hard hitting Vikings defense playing tough at home that is making handicappers nervous. And that may be for good reason as the Vikings are also fighting for a playoff spot. I don’t think the Vikings can win this game but they are 4-1 at home and that has to be respected.
With that in mind, you could definitely look at the Under 44.5 for this game and the -175 moneyline for the Cowboys as well as any number of prop bets. I would be tempted to take Dallas -3.5 but I think the Vikings could play very tough at home and make it closer than it should be.
