My Ryder Cup betting preview is a long standing tradition of which I am very proud. It is one of the few sporting events that I let distract me during the course of the football season, mainly because I am a patriot and a very poor golfer. So here is my Ryder Cup betting preview and as always make sure to add in your own golf handicapping savvy.
Ryder Cup Betting Preview – USA USA USA
American Ryder Cup fans are notorious for being rude, loud, and disruptive. With the 2016 Ryder Cup taking place in the U.S. at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota, American fans will no doubt be able to indulge in the closest thing golf has to hooliganism. Expect chants of USA USA USA and why not- for once the Americans are actually favorites to win at a respectable -185. Team Europe on the other hand is a long +175 to take home the hardware.
It has not been a good run for the USA in recent Ryder Cups with the Europeans winning 9 or the last 11 contests. The Ryder Cup is played every two years and so that is a long time to go hungry. However in the circle of life, as much as it could be said to apply to golf, the Europeans are a little long in the tooth and fully half of the 12 players will be rookies.
The Americans on the other hand may have their best team ever according to the creepily named Davis Love III. Those in the know, like yours truly, would dispute that pointing to the great 1981 team among others. But Love is the Captain, which also sounds weird, and as such is required to embellish a bit. However, there is no doubt that any team with the likes of Dustin Johnson, Zack Johnson, Ricky Fowler, Jordan Spieth, and Phil “Lefty” Mickelson are a strong unit.
Ryder Cup Betting Preview – Taking Out the Eurotrash
The Europeans on the other hand have a solid if not spectacular line up that includes Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, and Henrik Stenson. Those are some good names of course, but it is the lack of additional names that is the cause for concern. Team Europe’s mantra this year is “shoulder to shoulder” otherwise known as “teamwork”- which of course means you are fielding the B Team.
So where does this leave us for our Ryder Cup betting preview? Well if you like betting on golf then you will want to be all over Team USA for the Ryder Cup 2016. Barring a replay of Team Europe’s crazy come from behind win in the 2012, this is definitely the Americans to lose. There is just too much talent on the U.S. team, and too little on Team Europe, for the good ole boys of golf to lose. Now stranger things have happened- look back at some of the heavyweight American teams with the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson etc that the Europeans beat up on continually. But the Americans have finally cottoned to the notion of team chemistry, as opposed to soley to lumping together the top 12 ranked golfers, and this year they look like winners.
Online Golf Betting – Proposition Odds
Another option is to do a little digging and look at some of the Ryder Cup prop bets for value mismatches. I like seeing a little bit of golf before I jump all over prop bets for something like the Ryder Cup, but when it comes to online golf betting props are a ton of fun. Off the top of my head I like “Player to collect most points in 2016 Ryder Cup: Jordan Spieth v.s. Patrick Reed”. Take Spieth at -155 as he has the advantage of all of that big stage experience.
