Smart British Open Golf Bets – Favorite Picks

Smart British Open golf bets are things of great rarity and are usually jealously guarded. There is no other golfing major that is as difficult, capricious, weather vulnerable, and undeniably frustrating as The Open. Although the British Open is played at a different course every year, it is almost always played in Scotland where the natural ruggedness of the courses adds a real old world charm.

Smart British Open Golf Bets – 2016 Royal Troon

This year the British Open will be played at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Ayreshire, where I think they most likely filmed parts of Braveheart. The Royal Troon just voted this year to allow women to be members, and word is that they expect their first female member to join in 2150. Scottish misogynists aside, the Royal Troon is a stunning natural course that encapsulates everything special about the birthplace of golf.

Betting on Golf – 2016 British Open

So who are the probable frontrunners for the British Open in 2016? Well first and foremost Dustin Johnson, or DJ as he is known to The Great One, is absolutely on fire and playing monster golf. Coming off strong back to back wins in the U.S. Open and the Bridgestone International, Mr. Paulina Gretzky is playing the best golf of his life. Currently Johnson sits as the second odds on favorite at +800 which could be a very juicy bet as I expect him to play well.

Online Golf Wagers – Jason Day Odds

Who has the lowest odds when it comes to British Open handicapping? If you guessed Jason Day you would be right. Although Day collapsed on the last 9 holes of the U.S. Open, he is still World No. 1 and for good reason. He is coming off a monster 2015 season and has had an excellent start to 2016 all things considered. I think however he will struggle a bit at the Troon given that it isn’t his style of golf, so his +750 looks a little too lean for me to think about putting money on it.

Jordan Spieth Lines and Odds – 2016 British Open

And lastly Jordan Spieth is always a contender and came in 4th at The Open in 2015. Spieth has been a little cool of late, if you count being the third best golfer in the world as being off your game. However, he is resilient and young, and I expect him to begin racking up victories as he finds his rhythm again. Both he and Rory McIlroy are at +900 which I think is fair but not steal worthy.

Smart Golf Bets – Best British Open Picks

My darkhorse pick for the 2016 British Open is Henrik Stenson. The Swede currently sits in the No. 6 spot on the PGA tour and has an excellent and consistent technical game. It is that type of game that can win on a tough course like the Royal Troon, particularly if the weather turns nasty. The only disadvantage to betting on Stenson is that he lacks the capacity to take big risks which is sometimes how you win big tournaments. However, Stenson has never won one of the big ones although notably finished 2nd at the 2013 British Open. At +2800 there is a lot of value there for someone who could possibly be in contention heading into Sunday. As always use your own handicapping metrics and good luck this weekend!
