My 2017 U.S. Open picks are likely to be a little more complicated this year with parity restored on the PGA Tour. This year I often have to look up the name of a tournament winner as I have never heard of them before. Don’t get me wrong, this is a good thing. Although we love sports heroes, and love to watch them fall even more, it is a nice change to see that anyone can win on “any given Sunday”.
With the older golfers like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickleson no longer competitive and dominant, I have gone with the trio of today’s elite golfers as my 2017 U.S. Open picks. That would be Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, and Jordan Spieth. Make no mistake, I am seriously looking at some talented dark horses to take the hardware in Erin Hills as well. Let’s take a look at the favorites for next week in this article, and then we will look at some solid outside U.S. Open picks in a following article.
U.S. Open Picks – 2017 PGA Tour Odds
The U.S. Open is possibly my favorite of all of golf’s majors and seems to truly embody the American golf game. This year’s tournament should be no different, and as in preceding years the course at Erin Hills will be technically difficult. The U.S. Open has always rewarded accurate drives, and penalizes wayward shots with narrow approaches and plenty of bunkers.
2017 U.S. Open Betting – Dustin Johnson
This year will see the usual suspects favored to win the tournament. Although lines will be updated after this weekend’s FedEx St. Jude Classic, we saw Dustin Johnson about +650 which makes sense for the World No. 1. DJ has been on a hot streak when not falling down stairs, and should have a strong outing this coming weekend as well. DJ is also top on the money list with over 6.4 million in earnings this year alone.
Online Betting Golf Odds – Jason Day
Jason Day remains an elite golfer and had a stunning 2015. With no wins this year, the Australian is not in his usual peak form. However, he has had personal issues in the form of family illness to attend to and as such his focus has naturally been elsewhere. Day should be about +1000 to take down his next major and has been getting into form of late.
PGA U.S. Open Tips – Jordan Spieth
Jordan Spieth has also cooled off as of late, and although he has notched fewer wins he has finished in the top 10 six times this year. In fact, Spieth is ranked #5 in the world and is 7th on the money list. It is almost a certainty that Spieth will find his form again, and so if he ends up any longer than +1000 think about investing in him to win.
Golf Betting Online – Rory McIlroy
Former World No.1 Rory McIlroy seems to be slowly but steadily returning to elite status and currently sits second behind DJ in the PGA rankings. Can he close the big ones again is really the question? Most likely Rory will go off about +900, and much as I like his recent play I think those odds are just too lean. I would much rather take Day or Spieth at those numbers.
Early next week I will take a look at the updated odds as we solidify our U.S. Open picks. I think I will definitely have a few longer shots in the group like Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama, and Jon Rahm. Make sure to check back!
