The best NHL bets are not only the ones that make you money, but also the ones that make you look smart. It does my ego good, after getting battered by the real world all day long, to pull off both a smart and profitable hockey bet. The best NHL bets are usually made on the point spread, or Puckline, but you can do very well betting NHL proposition and hockey future bets.
I am going to turn this into a longer series about how to bet on hockey profitably, but for this first article let’s see where we are with the Eastern Conference leading Montreal Canadiens. From that we will see what might be smart hockey picks moving forward, and take a look at some other teams down the road as well.
Best NHL Bets – Montreal Canadiens
Les Habitants are cruising with a league leading 13-2-1 record having lost for only the third time last night against the surging Chicago Blackhawks. This is not unfamiliar territory for the Montreal Canadiens as they have had very strong starts the past couple of years.
There is only one hiccup before we award them the Stanley Cup and it is the same one that derailed them last year. Can phenom goaltender and Vezina winner Carey Price stay healthy? Last season while Price was between the pipes the Canadiens were all but unbeatable. Once Price was injured, the Montrealers went into free fall and finished the season halfway down the table and out of the playoffs.
NHL Future Betting – Eastern Conference Picks
Price is currently out with the flu but his previously injured knee is holding up which is good news for the Canadiens. What makes me leery of placing some future bets on the Canadiens is the dependence that the organization has on one player. This makes them very vulnerable and potentially not one of your best NHL bets when it comes to futures. The Canadians are currently favorites to win the Eastern Conference at +400 and co-favorites to win the Stanley Cup at +750.
I think the time to bet the Canadiens on future bets has probably passed, but while Carey Price remains healthy bet the heck out of them through the regular season. I would tend to bet them less on the point spread or Puckline, and more on the moneyline as they will win a lot of games by one goal as Price will sometimes be stealing victory from the jaws of defeat. Bonne Chance!
