My Kentucky Derby 2017 tips are like rare nuggets of precious ore- capable of bestowing riches or turning out to fool’s gold. I am doing pretty well over the last few years due to their being a strong favorite in the race, but the 2017 Kentucky Derby should be a little different. Although there are a couple of fairly talented favorites, the field has much more parity this year.
I wrote about some of my 2017 Kentucky Derby picks here and I stand by them assuming that they make it to the post next weekend. Post positions by the way will not be announced until 11 am EST on Wednesday May 3rd. So let’s take a look at some Kentucky Derby 2017 tips prior to then, and we will reevaluate after the all important starting post positions are announced. This is always important for the Run For The Roses as it has one of the largest starting fields of any major horse race.
Kentucky Derby 2017 Tips – McCraken
We took a look at front runners Always Dreaming and Classic Empire along with talented former longer shot McCraken. If you will remember McCraken was +800 in last week’s article, and now has moved into second favorite at +375. I know you followed Uncle Jerry’s advice and bought him then as I advised!
Kentucky Derby Best Odds – Irap
Ok, bragging rights aside- how is the rest of the field looking? Well a bit ragged truth be told. There are a couple of horses that are worth looking further into. Let’s start with Irap. Irap is trained by Doug O’Neil who also trained last year’s Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist– so there is the right talent management there for sure.
Irap may not have even made it into the Kentucky Derby had it not been for his performance in the G2 Blue Grass Stakes in early April where he outran fellow KD entrants McCraken, Tapwrit, and Practical Joke. Irap sits at +550 to win and is one of my solid Kentucky Derby 2017 tips.
Girvin Horse Betting Odds – 2017 Kentucky Derby
When it comes to betting the Triple Crown online, I wouldn’t have thought that a horse like Girvin would be in my second tier picks. Girvin is an interesting horse that did not race as a two year old due to a couple of cracked hooves. After those healed up, the colt then won this year’s G2 Risen Start in February and the Derby tune up G2 Louisiana Derby. Both of those wins propelled Girvin back into Kentucky Derby contention, and there is another thing in this horse’s favor. After Girvin’s usual jockey chose to ride McCraken, Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith has come on board. Both of these bode well for Girvin.
The only fly in the ointment is that his training team headed by Joe Sharp have announced that there is another small hoof crack that they are monitoring heading into the big one at Churchill Downs. With that news Girvin’s price has moved out to +1400. Of course that reflects the reality of his injury but it also means more potential profit for you and me. I am heavily contemplating a Show Bet on Girvin and would advise you to do the same. This might be a risky bet as he could scratch so please do your own analysis here and pick the risk threshold that is right for you.

Lot’s of Kentucky Derby betting odds and lines will shift on Wednesday when the starting post positions are announced. I will do an update on any of the significant changes, particularly if any of our horses get the plum outside positions. If they get stuck on the rail, we can then also review and adapt accordingly.
