When it comes to my 2017 Kentucky Derby picks I am a bit of a traditionalist. Horse racing lines can be fairly unreliable indicators of the horse’s abilities on the day, so I tend to think a little less about the odds and a little more about form.
What that means is sampling a horse’s key competitive races over the last six or so months and looking for patterns. Note that I said competitive races. Ideally you would love to see some of the names of other horses running in the same race you are previewing. So let’s take a look at our 2017 Kentucky Derby Picks in some more detail. I will probably write a couple more of these before race time to cover off the most promising horses in the field at Churchill Downs.
Churchill Downs Betting – Always Dreaming
Any horse trained by Todd Pletcher is always a serious threat to win big races and Always Dreaming is no different. The colt came off a sizzling race in the G1 Florida Derby in early April beating KD entrant Gunnevera who was the big favorite in that race. Always Dreaming posted the 6th fastest time in the history of the race at 1:47:47- and that bodes well for the Derby on Saturday, May 6th at Churchill Downs. Always Dreaming is the favorite here at RealBet and is a lean +300 to win it all. I think this isn’t enough value and there is another horse I like as a bit of an outsider with bigger numbers. However, Always Dreaming is in my Show Bet, or top 3 finisher for sure.
2017 Kentucky Derby Picks – Classic Empire
Classic Empire is rated one of the best of the 2017 Kentucky Derby picks and for good reason. As the winner of the G1 Arkansas Derby just under two weeks ago, Classic Empire is hitting his stride just in time for the Run For The Roses. The 3 year old also won two other G1 races as a two year old so has the talent.
Currently Classic Empire is a narrow +325 second place favorite to win the 2017 Kentucky Derby. By the way, Classic Empire is the half brother of American Pharaoh which says something about his gene pool.
Best Kentucky Derby Picks – McCraken
First of all, I just like saying McCraken. Secondly, this horse is being flagged by some insiders to potentially be the quiet best of the 2017 Kentucky Derby picks. Why a horse that has only placed 3rd in a G1 race and losing to Derby entrant Irap at the same time? Well, the thinking is that since some of the early favorites have been injured (Not This Time and Mastery) that it is really anyone’s, err horse’s, race.
The reason you might not be hearing more about McCraken is that the colt has not raced in many high profile races and as such is slipping a bit under the radar. However this horse has good breeding with the phenom Ghostzapper as his sire. Currently McCraken is +800 to win the 2017 Kentucky Derby and I say think hard about buying him at this price as I think he will start to drop closer to race day. Currently, McCraken is my “dark horse” favorite.
Kentucky Derby Betting Online – Best Horses
In the next week or so I will profile a couple of other contenders such as Gunnevra, Irish War Cry, and Irap. These are all top thoroughbreds, and although too early to start talking about a Triple Crown, they may also have what it takes.
