Preakness betting tips are my specialty and I like to think that I am something of a horse wagering whisperer. While the Kentucky Derby may be the most famous of the Triple Crown races, I think the Preakness Stakes may be one of the easiest to handicap. Why? Because it is all about speed baby- either your horse has it or doesn’t.
Preakness Betting Tips – Online Horse Racing Picks
It may be something that your typical square punter does not realize, but the Preakness track at Pimlico is the shortest of the Triple Crown races and that makes a big difference. Any Preakness betting tips must take into account that this racecourse is half a furlong shorter than the Kentucky Derby- and a whole two and a half furlongs shorter than the Belmont Stakes.
So, how does this translate into “easy to handicap” and profits in our pockets. Well, if any horse you are looking at has things said about it such as, “Likes to close from the back” or “Saves everything for the stretch”, then you can pretty much discount them. Let’s take a look at some of the 2017 Preakness Stakes entrants to see who should do well.
Preakness Horse Odds – Speed Matters
In the Preakness you want a horse that is comfortable leading from the front and we don’t have to look any further than 2017 Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming. This year’s Derby, and by extension Preakness, was a bit unusual in that there wasn’t a hugely dominant favorite along the likes of American Pharaoh etc. Always Dreaming traded favorite honors with Classic Empire, until Always Dreaming was awarded the less than optimal 5th post position and dropped into second place at 5-1.
Always Dreaming Preakness Odds – Best Tips
However, Always Dreaming led from the get go and never relinquished the lead- and that is definitely a huge plus when it comes to my Preakness betting tips. This is a horse race that is designed for speed and quick starts, both of which Always Dreaming demonstrated at Churchill Downs just shy of two weeks ago. As such, the Todd Pletcher trained colt is a healthy -140 favorite to take the second leg of the famed Triple Crown in Pimlico. In my next post I will take a look at any serious contenders in Saturday’s race.
