It is never too early to start talking about Triple Crown odds as the Preakness Stakes takes place this Saturday, May 20th. The 142nd edition of the famed race at Pimlico in Baltimore will determine whether we are glued to our TV sets when the Belmont Stakes take place in June with the hope of seeing the rarest of horse racing unicorns- a Triple Crown winner.
Triple Crown Odds – 2017 Preakness Stakes
Now we had a Triple Crown winner two years ago in American Pharaoh so perhaps we are asking too much. However, there are few things as exciting in sports as the prospect of a horse winning three of arguably the toughest races in the world in consecutive fashion. Even non gamblers feel the special nature of the occasion and so they should.
Preakness Stakes Picks – Always Dreaming
But is it possible this year without an overwhelmingly dominant favorite a la American Pharaoh? Well oddly enough yes. In my last post on the 2017 Preakness Stakes I didn’t get into Triple Crown odds in any detail, but it is certainly a possibility this year. We took a closer look at the -140 favorite Always Dreaming earlier in the week, and now let’s take a look at the competition.
Triple Crown Odds – Classic Empire
If anyone has a chance of upsetting Always Dreaming it is Classic Empire. At one time the Kentucky Derby favorite, Classic Empire has all the tools and pedigree to defeat Always Dreaming and is currently the second favorite at +240. This is the horse that won 2 year old Horse of the Year and had a big win in the G1 Arkansas Derby leading up to the Kentucky Derby.
However, Classic Empire has suffered from more than a few health problems which may have impacted his performance at Churchill Downs. When it comes to Triple Crown odds he is a non factor other than he can certainly play spoiler to Always Dreaming. At the very least he should be part of any trifecta or a show bet.
Preakness Betting Picks – Lookin At Lee
The rest of the pack looks a little weak in my opinion. Surprise second place finisher at the Kentucky Derby Lookin At Lee could be a long shot bet. With 20/20 vision I like his 33-1 Derby odds better than his 10-1 Preakness odds but he could be a potential addition to your trifecta. Gunnervera? Mo Money Conquest? Meh.
2017 Preakness Winning Picks – Always Dreaming and Classic Empire
Ultimately I think you are looking at a duel between Always Dreaming and Classic Empire and maybe Looking at Lee finds some form. Remember this is only a ten horse starting field so many of the concerns of crowding and getting bumped are lessened compared to the Derby. This is a big advantage for favorites so expect them to perform strongly.
