MMA betting odds can be tough to handicap as there is a lot of unknowns that are not quantifiable in the same way team stats are. With a mega fight night approaching in the form of UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, I thought I would do a preliminary break down to help with your MMA picks. Note I am only looking at Main Card fights.
MMA Betting Odds – Miesha Tate vs. Raquel Pennington
After you stop asking plaintively “When will Ronda Rousey come back?” you may realize that Miesha Tate is a good bet for UFC 205. After winning the UFC Bantamweight Championship from Holly Holmes, and then getting beaten by now champion Amanda Nunes, Tate is looking to step back up to the elite level and most likely take on the winner of Rousey vs. Nunes II. Yep, there will be a rematch guaranteed.
So the path to that is through the 8-5 Raquel Pennington (+150) with Tate the strong favorite at -155 in terms of MMA odds. Make no mistake, anything can happen in the octagon, but Pennington is no Nunes so I expect Tate to win on points here.
Bet On UFC 205 – Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez
This is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated fights of the evening and features perennial PR machine Conor McGregor fighting current Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez. McGregor, already the Featherweight Champion, will be taking on the heavier Alvarez making up the weight difference by a combination of ego and talent.
This should be an excellent fight, and although McGregor is the fan favorite Alvarez may well be the better fighter at lightweight. McGregor can fight legitimately at that weight level but there is always the handicap of a fighter moving up in pounds. Alvarez is a solid fighter with a respectable 28-4 record who is a title holder for a reason. Don’t let the MMA odds fool you- this fight is much closer than it looks.
Smart UFC Picks – Tyron Woodley vs. Stephen Thompson
The welterweight belt is on the line as the 16-3 Tyron Woodley defends his title against the talented 13-1 Stephen Thompson. This should be another excellent fight and the current MMA odds have Woodley as the underdog at +160 and Thompson as the favorite at -200.
I think Thompson wins this fight although it will be a close one and most likely will go the distance. Woodley is a strong fighter and is the incumbent so this will not be a cakewalk. This will most likely go the distance and will probably be decided on points. If you are planning to bet on UFC 205 this might be the fight to miss as I think it could go either way.
