I am in the middle of handicapping my 2017 Wimbledon picks and thought I would share some of my thoughts. Firstly, I think tennis is going through a seismic shift in its identity and I suspect we are moving away from the day of dominating stars. Sure you are always going to have an elite that are overwhelming favorites in many matches, but the tournament fields are regaining parity.
2017 Wimbledon Picks – Tennis Betting Online
Over the past decade in tennis we have really seen an unprecedented number of heavyweights who have owned the game. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and the Williams sisters have virtually been exclusive owners of tennis’ hardware. However, as they have begun to age their grip is slipping and there isn’t a new crop of superstars in the same mold to follow. With that in mind let’s take a look at some 2017 Wimbledon picks which should turn us a profit and start with the men.
2017 Wimbledon Smart Bets – Mens’ Tennis Betting Odds
When it comes to 2017 Wimbledon picks I think the key this year will be injuries. By that I mean who can remain healthy as the tournament deepens. Already we have seen World #3 Stan Wawrinka withdraw due to an injured thigh and it appears that more players are following. Novak Djokovic’s first round opponent withdrew due to injury as did Roger Federer’s.
So keep an eye on who is looking gimpy and taking court side breaks. By far the biggest star who is battling an injury is Andy Murray. The Scotsman was seen limping away from a practice round early yesterday and could very well be playing injured. If you are liking Murray as a -1400 favorite against Dustin Brown (+750) you may want to reconsider. At the very least Brown will seriously test Murray and give us a good look at how healthy the World No. 1 actually is.
Tennis Betting Lines – 2017 Wimbledon Odds
Given that is still the Round of 64 there remains a lot of tennis left to play. One can reasonably expect the likes of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic to go deep. Both of these GOATs are -8000 in their next matches so it is tough to find value there at odds that are that steep.
I would suggest looking at some of the next level of talent like Canada’s Milos Raonic and Martin Cilic of Croatia. Raonic is a 6’5 player with a monster serve who is still looking for his first major. He is -1500 against Mikahil Youzny (+800) which is a much more reasonable set of odds for a favorite that should still win his match.
Cilic as well is a much more reasonable -1100 against his opponent Florian Mayer (+650). In the early stages I like to look at more matchups in this range e.g. top ten players against average competition which keeps the odds a little juicier. However you like to handicap tennis though, I recommend keeping an eye on injuries in the 2017 Wimbledon tournament.
