Home teams on Primetime bit the bullet hard in NFL Week 10 as home favorites were crushed in all three of the NFL’s marquee games this week. Let’s take a look and find out why bettors everywhere are limping into NFL Week 11 after a brutal slate of losses.
NFL Thursday Night Football – Buffalo Bills (+3) Beat New York Jets 22-17
It was unknown at the time, but the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets would set the tone for NFL Week 10. The Jets, favored by 3 points at home vs. a divisional rival, laid an egg on national television and at no point in the game ever covered the spread. They came close down the stretch, but three turnovers by QB Ryan Fitzpatrick sunk Gang Green as they lost to their old coach Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills.
The Jets defense is one of the best in the league and going up against a subpar Bill’s QB in the Meadowlands seemed like a favorable matchup for New York. It was quite the opposite as their defense couldn’t force any turnovers, and their offense continually gave the ball back to the Bills with great field position.
If you took the Jets or the Over (42) you were out of luck heading into Sunday. However, at least Sunday Night would provide some reprieve, right?
NFL Sunday Night Football – Arizona Cardinals (+3) Beat Seattle Seahawks 39-32
The Hawks are 14-2 on Primetime in the Pete Carroll era. They have never lost a home Primetime game during that stretch. Russell Wilson has never lost back-to-back home games before in his career. The Hawks have never lost more than two home games in a season with Russ Wilson under center.
Then Sunday night happened.
The Cardinals came out to a double-digit lead by halftime, and after some back and forth action, the dust settled on a 7 point Cardinal win. The Seahawks defense, which had been 2nd in points against heading into Sunday night, gave up over 35 for the first time in over five seasons- and did so by coughing up another 4th quarter lead.
What makes this loss even worse is that the majority of the money ended up on both the Hawks (-3) and the Under (43.5). Much like Thursday night, bettors were left scrambling as they headed into the week’s final primetime tilt on Monday night.
NFL Monday Night Football – Houston Texans (+11) Beat Cincinnati Bengals 10-6
Go figure the biggest upset of the week went down on Monday night. As 11 point favorites, the Bengals didn’t even score a touchdown at home and lost outright for the first time all season. The Bengals offense did nothing all game and put up 0 points in the 2nd half. Drops, bad decisions, and a whole lot of J.J. Watt contributed to the Bengals picking up their first loss of the season.
The O/U was set at 46.5, which was literally 30 points too high for this game. If you had the under, you were never in doubt. If you had the Texans, you were never in doubt. If you had the over and the Bengals, you probably could’ve turned this one off at the half.
Home Favorites Look Stronger in Week 11 – A New Hope
So unexpectedly all three home favorites lost on Primetime this week, but Week 11 provides hope. The New England Patriots are on Monday Night Football as they continue their ‘Gronk You’ tour across the NFL. Here are the spreads and O/U totals for Week 11’s primetime games (home teams in caps).
- Thursday Night Football: JAGUARS (-3) over Titans (43)
- Sunday Night Football: CARDINALS (-4) over Bengals (47.5)
- Monday Night Football: PATRIOTS (-7) over Bills (48.5)
